Orthodontic Steps

familiarize yourself with the processes and steps that will be followed!

First Visit

Examination, record taking and report writing.
The doctor will examine, take records and compile a report. Records include: Photographs, Panoramic and cephalography x-rays. Special x-rays such as the hand and 3-D will be requested based on the findings of the examination.

The doctor will compile a report and if you are on medical aid, the report will be sent to your medical aid to seek approval for treatment. Please bring your card and identity document to verify ownership.

Note that each medical aid has its own rules regarding payment for orthodontic treatment and even within the same medical aid there are different plans. We, therefore, cannot determine upfront how much your medical aid will cover for the treatment. Some medical aids may also refuse to cover for the treatment based on their rules. We have no control on this as the choice of medical aid plan was between you and them.

Second Visit

Treatment and financial discussion
The report will be discussed with you and based on the response from your medical aid, a payment plan will be worked and agreed upon. A contract will then be signed, and treatment will begin if you agree to it. Preliminary work like cleaning of teeth, restorations (fillings),

treatment of gum disease etc, must be done when treatment begins. Those situations requiring removal of specific teeth will be discussed with you and we will advise you when these teeth may be removed.

Third Visit

Treatment begins
Braces will be bonded on teeth and from then onwards, the onus is on you to keep the teeth clean, to come for your appointments as scheduled and to follow any other instructions specific to solving your teeth.
Treatment duration differs and depends on the severity of your problem.

Recall visits

It is important to honour appointments so that we can finish treatment on time. It is also important to take good care of your braces by avoiding breakages as these also delay treatment. Monthly payments as agreed should be complied to

Removal of braces

Once teeth are well aligned it is time to take off braces. Retainers will be made again the responsibility is on you to follow instructions regarding the wear of retainers. If you do not wear retainers, teeth may move and re-treatment, at your own cost, may have to be done if you want your teeth to be straightened again.
